Dealing with and Understanding Stress

Stress is a common feeling we get when we feel under pressure. A small amount can be good and motivate as to meet our goals. But too much stress, when it feels out of control, can impact our mood, our wellbeing, our relationships with people around us.

Some people, when they go through long periods of stress, experience ‘burnout’ – a feeling of complete physical and emotional exhaustion. Luckily, there are ways to stop stress getting out of control.

Little things you can do at home –

Listen

  • Listen to your child without judgment
  • Reassure them that it’s okay to feel stressed
  • Help them identify what makes them feel stressed

Provide Support

  • Give them extra love, time, and attention
  • Help them feel safe and loved
  • Help them find solutions to their worries
  • Set up routines to help them feel settled

Be a role model

  • Talk about how you’ve dealt with stressful situations
  • Demonstrate healthy ways to manage stress

Seek Help

  • If signs of stress don’t decrease or disappear, seek help from a health care provider, counsellor, or therapist

Help them learn about stress

  • If signs of stress don’t decrease or disappear, seek help from a health care provider, counsellor, or therapist
