The use of dice, tens frames, Numicon shapes, number rods, number lines, jugs, bricks and manipulatives used in our lessons are specifically designed to encourage children to notice and talk about relationships between things. Children are encouraged to investigate and apply their understanding to real world situations and to use appropriate mathematical language in their reasoning. In every lesson children have the opportunity to record and complete practical mathematical activities.
The children will talk about what makes them unique and what they share in common. We will look at families, houses and our community, including people who help us. We will be fostering a sense of belonging in our class and our school as we establish the routines, ethos and expectations.
This project explores the differences in the world at night compared to during the day. It teaches children about the importance of a good night’s sleep, and helps them to discover what is happening in the world while they are sleeping, including finding out about nocturnal animals.
This topic brings to light changes that happen over time to people, places and the design of everyday objects, such as toys. We will find out what a museum is, inspect historic portraits and find out the purpose of a family tree.
Reception will find out what seeds are, what plants need to grow and how farms do this on a large scale. Then, they will learn where different types of food come from and distinguish which foods are a healthy part of a balanced diet and which are not.
This topic will enable students to identify wild animals from domestic ones. The children will be able to identify different types of animal homes (eg: nest, web, den) and different climates (eg: desert, grassland, forest). In addition, we will consider why some features of animals are suited to their habitats.
Finally, we will explore sun safety and the need to look after our oceans. The children will discover the effects of pollution and litter on marine creatures and how small changes can have big impacts.
