National Curriculum Aims

In Key Stage 1, the National Curriculum aims to develop knowledge about the world, the United Kingdom and their locality. Children should be able to use geographical vocabulary relating to human and physical geography and begin to use geographical skills to study the local area.

In Key Stage 2, the National Curriculum aims to extend their knowledge and understanding beyond the local area to include the United Kingdom and Europe, North and South America. Children should be able to identify and explain key human and physical features. They should develop their use of geographical knowledge, understanding and skills to enhance their locational and place knowledge.

Vision

Our vision in geography is to inspire children to develop a curiosity and fascination about the world, enabling them to understand human impact on the world and consider their role regarding this in the future.

Geography develops our pupils’ understanding of the world in which they live through the study of location, place, human and physical features and geographical fieldwork. Geography provides strong links with learning in maths, history, science and the understanding of the British Values.

Our curriculum aims to develop children’s geographical skills, including fieldwork and map work. Each year group carries out a local study which helps our pupils gain a greater understanding of our community in the past and present day.

Our pupils will develop knowledge and skills that will aid them throughout their life. We encourage all children to be a geographer!

It ‘is an education for life and living’- The Royal Society of Geographers.

Knowledge Organisers

For each Topic we complete in school, the teachers in that year group create knowledge organisers with the knowledge they want to embed for the children. An example knowledge organiser for each year group is attached below:
