In Reception we follow the September 2021 EYFS statutory framework. The framework includes 7 areas of learning consisting of 3 prime areas and 4 specific areas. We have weekly themes which encourage the children to actively learn, create and think critically. These opportunities are established through a multi-sensory approach to learning and are designed to capture and inspire the inquisitive nature of children in Early Years.
This half-term we focus on ourselves, school life and what Autumn is like. We will look at families, houses and our community. In English, the children begin their journey with daily phonics lessons. The children then use their developing phonic knowledge, to begin to record the initial sounds they hear in a word before moving on to write things such as simple labels for a picture. In Maths, the children will learn to subitise numbers up to 5, count, form their numbers consistently and correctly and then begin to develop and understanding of how numbers are made up (composition).
This half-term we focus on celebrations, remembrance and light and dark. The children will learn how and why people of different cultures celebrate, they will develop an understanding of what happens during the world at night-time and compare this to day-time; as well as learn about nocturnal animals. In English the children continue to develop their phonic knowledge and use this to write initial and final sounds in words, before moving on to write whole simple words. The children will explore a variety of texts and write labels and lists using their phonic knowledge. In Maths, the children will deepen their understanding of composition of number, comparing amounts and counting.
This half-term we focus on New Year celebrations at home and abroad, winter, birds and in the past. The children will deepen their understanding of what a celebration is and how different cultures celebrate, we will look at the world around us and how it has changed during winter, the children will explore the past by looking at how people, places and objects change over time. We will also get involved in the “Big Garden Bird Watch”. In English, we will explore both narrative and non-fiction books, looking at how they are different. Our focus for writing will be to write captions for pictures. In Maths, we will extend our knowledge on counting and ordering numbers, as well as focusing on the composition of numbers 5 and above. We will also focus on length looking at short and long.
